What is the ascendant?
The ascendant is the point where the eastern horizon intersects the ecliptic at the moment of birth. Its zodiac sign is called the rising sign. A Sun sign can usually be estimated from a birthday, but the ascendant depends on the local horizon. People born on the same day at different times or in different places can therefore have different rising signs.
What information is needed?
A calculation uses the calendar date, the most accurate available local birth time and the birthplace. The place supplies geographic coordinates, while the local time must be interpreted using the time-zone rules that applied on that date. Current time-zone rules are not always appropriate for a historical birth. A primary record, such as a hospital record, is a better starting point than an approximate family recollection.
Why is the two-hour rule approximate?
All twelve zodiac signs pass over the horizon during the course of a day, but their rising times are unequal. Latitude and celestial geometry change how long each takes. A fixed two-hour lookup cannot reliably replace a calculation. Near a sign boundary, a small time difference may change the rising sign; elsewhere, the same difference may change only its degree.
How can you compare different results?
Check the date format, the 12- or 24-hour clock, the selected location and the time zone. Then check whether both tools use a tropical or sidereal zodiac. If your birth time is uncertain, record the plausible range. Trying several times can reveal uncertainty, but cannot prove which time is correct. Choosing the result that seems to fit your personality is not a substitute for a reliable birth record.
