Houses represent areas of life in astrology. An empty house does not mean that area is absent from your life.
The difference between a house and a sign
Signs divide the zodiac into twelve sections. Houses form another framework based on the birth time and place. A planet’s sign and house are used to answer different interpretive questions: the sign describes a style of expression, while the house suggests an area of life associated with that theme. The first house does not automatically mean Aries in every chart.
The first six houses: personal areas
In common modern interpretations, the first house concerns self and outward approach; the second personal resources and values; the third learning and everyday communication; the fourth home and roots; the fifth creativity and enjoyment; and the sixth daily routines and working habits. These are short introductory labels. Reducing a house to a single word or event removes the wider context of a reading.
The next six houses: shared areas
The seventh is associated with partnerships; the eighth with shared resources and transformation; the ninth with higher learning and worldview; the tenth with public role and direction; the eleventh with groups and shared aims; and the twelfth with retreat and less visible processes. These symbolic themes do not establish that a particular future event must happen.
Empty houses and different house systems
It is normal for some houses to contain no planets. This does not mean those parts of life are missing. A reading may also consider the sign on a house cusp and its ruler. Placidus, Equal House and Whole Sign systems can define house boundaries differently. Seeing a planet in different houses in two tools is not necessarily a calculation error. Compare the system and birth time first; without a reliable time, house interpretations remain limited.
