How to read a birth chart

Understand what the chart shows
A birth chart is a diagram of celestial positions calculated for a particular time and place. Astrology interprets that diagram symbolically. The calculation and its interpretation are different: an accurate astronomical position does not establish the scientific validity of an astrological meaning. You can approach a chart as a starting point for reflection rather than a verdict about who you are.
Separate the four layers
Planets are used to describe a subject or function, signs its style of expression, houses an area of life, and aspects the geometric relationships between planets. Mercury, for example, is traditionally associated with thinking and communication. Its sign, house and aspects are read together. A single sentence about Mercury in one sign cannot describe the entire chart.
Start with the Sun, Moon and rising sign
You do not need to memorise every symbol at once. Find the Sun, Moon and ascendant and note their signs. Astrological readings associate the Sun with identity and direction, the Moon with emotional habits, and the ascendant with a way of approaching the world. Treat these as themes to consider, rather than fixed labels. Notice both what feels relevant and what does not.
Check the information and settings
Use the correct birth date, time and place. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules affect the calculation. If two charts look different, compare their input data, zodiac and house system before comparing interpretations. Without a reliable birth time, the ascendant and houses are uncertain. Choose one question, such as how you communicate, and read the relevant placements together. Compare the interpretation with your experience; you do not need to force yourself to fit it.
